The Multi-Cultural Myth
As we discuss the issue of race relations in this country, I think it is of great importance to discuss the “new ideas” in our education system and other places that are designed to weed out racism. A common phrase that I’ve heard to describe these programs is "Multi-Culturalism." The idea is that if we bring students together and teach them about each other’s culture and differences then magically they won’t grow up as racists. As I’ve watched my own children go through this education, it almost feels as though the administrators believe that we parents are instilling our children with racist attitudes -- and that only through multi-culturalism will they be able to reverse the damage that we parents have done. But once again, the idea of multi-culturalism sounds wonderful, but it goes against human nature entirely, and therefore, probably does more harm than good.
How do you choose your friends? How did you choose your spouse? Were you put in a large room and taught about what makes you different? Probably not! The truth is that human nature is to choose friends based upon commonality, not differences. I have a very diverse group of friends that I see on a regular basis because we have a common interest in playing the sport of basketball. If it were not for this common ground we probably would pass each other on the street without saying so much as hello. Basketball brought us together, and along the way we learned about our differences. This is why we have clubs and organizations that focus on commonalities instead of differences. Have you ever seen the “We are Different Club” or the “Nothing in Common Club?” They don’t exist because it is human nature to be around people with whom we have commonalties -- and by the way, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this. It is not racist for a bunch of white people to hang out with each other because they have similar backgrounds and interest. The same goes for a group of Blacks, Hispanics, etc.. I can guarantee you that anytime you see a group of people together that have a diversified background that they came together based upon some common theme. That’s how we work and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.
